INTRODUCTION

What is the YanCEyDesktop Reader for the PC (YwD)?
YanCEyDesktop Reader for the PC (also known as YwD) is a desktop reader for Yanceyware eBooks. YanCEyDesktop is compatible with YanCEyWare Reader for the Pocket PC (YwR) and shares eBooks, libraries, menus, annotations, markup and quickmarks with the PPC reader. YwD supports printing, copy/paste to other applications, multiple quickmark sets, image viewing and all the annotation/markup features of the PPC Reader.

If you are creating your own Yanceyware menus or ebooks, you can test them on the PC before moving them to the PocketPC. If it works on the PPC version it will work on the Desktop version and vise-versa.
How is YwD different than the YanCEyWare Reader for PPC (YwR)?
Although functionally very similar, YwD takes advantage of the larger screen area of the PC. If you use YwR, the functionality of YwD will be very familiar.

For specific differences, click here.

Who makes these products?
The eBook format and the eBook Reader for Pocket PC (YwR) was created by Bryce Yancey - thus "Yanceyware".  Since then, a number of related tools, utilities and eBooks have been created and are the work of a number of different authors.  All operate under the "YanCEyWare" moniker to designate compatibility or purpose, not organizational affiliation. The Yanceyware forums, eBook lists, responses to support questions, help files, guides, tool development, etc, are all done by an extended group of volunteers (and Bryce).

YanCEyDesktop is the most recent addition - it was written by Darren Remington.

Where can I download YanCEyDesktop?
See http://www.yanceydesktop.com  for information about the current release and the download site.  YanCEyDesktop requires Microsoft .NET 2.0.
What are Yanceyware eBook files (.ybk)?
eBooks are specifically formatted files for use with the YwR and YwD readers.  eBook files have a .ybk extension.
What is a Yanceyware Library?
The eBook readers group .ybk files into a related collection of books called a "Library".  Often, books in a library have links to each other and make more sense when used as a group (eg. the scriptures).  Library ebooks are located in a single folder on your hard drive (or PPC storage card).  Click here to learn more about how to create a Yanceyware library.

Menus (standard and custom) can be created to make access to the books in a library easy and quick.

INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATION

What are the system requirements?
YanCEyDesktop will run on any machine supported by the Microsoft .NET 2.0 framework.

Note: the .NET framework is integral (built-in) to all versions of Windows Vista. If you are running Vista, no separate download of the framework is required.

Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 98; Windows 98 Second Edition; Windows ME; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP Service Pack 2
Download size:
22.4 MB (x86)

For more information, go to: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

How do I install YanCEyDesktop?
Follow the instructions given in the (sticky) "FAQ: Installing YanCEyDesktop" topic in the YwD Support Forum at: http://www.yanceyware.com/support/showthread.php?t=3

Creating a Yanceyware eBook library
  See Creating a Library.

YwD (Desktop) AND YwR (PPC/WM) INTEGRATION

What are the differences between the PC and PPC eBook readers?

Click here to see the "Features That Might Not Be Obvious" topic on the YanCEyDesktop Support Forums.

Is there a sync function to automatically synchronize my PC and PPC libraries?
A separate project has started to provide sync functionality between platforms and YwR/YwD.
How do I share Libraries between platforms?
Until a sync program exits for YwR/YwD, sharing of libraries, markup, annotations and quickmarks can be done manually by copying the files between the PocketPC and the desktop machine.

Annotations & Markup
Annotations and markup are completely compatible between platforms.

YwD uses the same default markup colors as YwR. If you have customized your YwR colors, YwD is unable to retrieve these settings from the PPC.  However, any markups/annotations made using YwR PPC custom colors will show correctly on YanCEyDesktop.  Similarly, custom colors you create in YanCEyDesktop will not be available on the PPC but markups/annotations made on the PC will show correctly in YwR.

YanCEyWare LIBRARIES

What is a Library?
The eBook readers group .ybk files into a related group of books called a "Library".

Creating a Library
Creating a library is described in the YanCEyWare Reader Installation page. If you ignore the PPC-specific instructions, the procedure is the same: http://www.yanceyware.com/products/reader_installation.htm

These instructions will be adapted and incorporated into this FAQ soon.

Adding a menu
Adding a menu is described in the YanCEyWare Reader Installation page. If you substitute your PC library folder for the PPC library folder in the instructions, the procedure (and menus) are exactly the same: http://www.yanceyware.com/products/reader_installation_menu.htm

This site has several available menus for eBook readers: http://www.thecoffeys.net/yanceyware/Menus/

These instructions will be adapted and incorporated into this FAQ soon.

Mindy Lee's Classic Children's Classic children's literature from Project Gutenburg
Nicholas Lambert's Site Classical eBooks with custom menus: Shakespeare, Dickens, Twain, Austen, Homer, etc.

Also, check the eBook Forum for eBooks that may not yet be available on any of these sites.
